The tradition of cooling white wine and champagne at the table originated, of course, in France. Not only is it a practical way of preserving the qualities of the beverage - it is a real ritual, and the ring of ice cubes, the dripping bottle and the beads of condensation collecting on the outside of the cooler on a warm evening are all part of it. The French call their secret fetish seaux bouteille, or bottle bucket. Understandably so. To allow sufficient room for the ice and water the container must be considerably wider than the bottle.
