Massai is an extreme example of up-to-date design. The specific feature of this table lamp is the African-urban mixture of materials. The foot and shaft turned from fire-treated pinewood give this lamp an archaic appeal whereas its shade with silk visual effect has a rather classic look. A ball-shaped shaft with foot is turned from pinewood. Then the wood is fire-treated, brushed and finally waxed. The result of this 'rude' workmanship emphasizes the organic and archaic charm of the wood: there are cracks and the veins of the wood become visible in relief. Sometimes you can even see wood of a lighter colour. This means that the conspicuous cracks in the wooden foot are deliberately wanted. They are an important characteristic of the Massai lamp and its wild elegant appeal. However, to those who might not like this effect, we recommend to apply some black stain (Lambert) on the light wood to adjust its colour to the dark wood.
